Self Made Soul Interview

Q: I did some searching, and the only material I can find of your guys' work is the album "The Future Belongs To Us." Was their any material released by the band prior to the release of your full length?

A: In 2003 we released another album called "I Am What I Believe". It was a lot more of an experimental effort with heavy emphasis on electronics and atmospherics. Since we've grown so far from that style and we've received more coverage for our newer work, the older album gets buried underneath its successor.

Q: If not, why did you decide to start with a full length as opposed to testing the waters
with an EP like so many other bands seem to do?

A: The idea of an EP didn't occur to us when we were putting together the album and in hindsight, it may have been a better idea so as to, as you
say, "test the waters." With that said, we are going to be recording an EP sometime this summer/early fall to see what everyone's reaction is to our
newer, heavier direction.

Q: I see you're playing a handful of shows in March, any plans on a full tour in the future?

A: After March, we're taking a couple of months off to focus on writing. We'll do a show here or there to work out the kinks in the new songs. Once we release the EP and see what the reception is regionally, we want to tour to support it and hopefully build up a buzz/demand for a full length.

Q: I know that you're full length was a somewhat recent release, but can we expect any new material in the near future?

A: We hope to complete a new EP sometime this summer/early fall. Right now we're focusing on writing and shopping for producers.

Q: Any history behind the name of the band?

A: At the time we were naming the band, I was reading a lot of Ayn Rand and the phrase "Self Made Soul" comes from a passage in Rand's book "Atlas Shrugged" where the character John Galt says: "...just as man is a being of self-made wealth, so he is a being of self-made soul". We felt it summarized our philosophy and the message in our songs well.

Q: Any exciting/horrifying experiences when touring or playing a live show?

A: Nothing too horrifying yet, apart from experiencing the obligatory Murphy's Law during the occasional live show where everything seems to go wrong or break, etc...As far as exciting experiences go, we've had a lot of great shows where the crowd is just so responsive and enthusiastic, it makes it all worth it. Those shows are definitely highlights.

Q: Doing anything exciting outside of Self Made Soul? School? Work? Other bands?

A: Well, we all have hobbies like video games, biking/hiking, reading, cooking, cosmology, etc. Matt goes to school for music and teaches drums.

Here’s the final five, they’re just a few random questions that will help readers and fans get to know you a little better:

Q: Any sports fans?
A: I'm definitely not a sports fan in the slightest, but I think everyone else has at least a small interest in basketball, baseball and hockey.

Q: Favorite movie that you've seen so far this year?
A: I haven't seen any new movies this year...although I did watch The Goonies again recently!

Q: The CD you find yourself currently listening to?
A: Emarosa: Relativity, Norma Jean: Oh God, the Aftermath

Q: Worst job you've ever had?
A: Working at Bradlees

Q: The one band that you'd do anything to tour with?
A: Hmm...maybe Underoath or Converge
