Maycomb

Maycomb Interview w/Jimmy Taylor

Q: I couldn't find much of a band bio regarding your guys' past. Is there any history between band mates or prior bands?

A:
We haven't really written a good bio for ourselves! We do keep meaning to write one, but never really get round to it. Maybe we'll actually do it this week. These questions have inspired me. In detail, the amount of set backs this band went through to get to this point would take weeks to write about. So in short; me, Si and Jonny used to play together in another (terrible) band. After we stumbled across Simon's singing abilities we decided to go a different direction, away from the other members. It eventually turned into Maycomb. We knew Jack from Wolverhamptons pop-punk hometown heroes Zero Point Six. We were currently seeking a guitarist, and whilst me and Si were on holiday with Jack we asked him to fill in on second guitar. Eventually he agreed to join! It always felt like the 3 of us before Jack joined, no matter who else was in the band. But now it couldn't be any different. He was definitely the missing piece to the puzzle.

Q: I see that you're touring a little with Kyoto Drive . How did you both originally meet, and what spurred you guys to get together for this mini-tour?

A: I've known the boys in Kyoto for years, long before their band came about. And our old bands used to play together round the local scene. They've always been top guys, and we love hanging with them. I was a bit surprised when they said they were starting this new band, but I was always really excited to hear it. I went and checked out their first show, and loved what they were doing. Since then they've written some amazing songs, and they always seemed real keen to play with Maycomb. Touring with a band like Kyoto Drive is really refreshing. It's nice to watch a melody driven band that doesn't want to start throwing down every 8 bars.

Q: Do you plan on doing future tours with KD?

A: I know we're both gonna be busy with trying to release new music, but I've always got time for them. I'd love to do another tour with them next year, hopefully when we've both gained a bit more recognition. I think our two bands will be playing together as long as we're both still up and running.

Q: Think you'll wind up touring in America at all?

A: Touring America is any English bands dream. As far fetched as it may be, everyone who plays in a rock band will always want to travel to the U.S and tour. I hope one day it becomes reality, but we'll concentrate on trying to break the UK first, haha.

Q: Any exciting tour or venue stories?

A: We have a few stories about trying to get promoters to actually pay up with the guaranteed amount. We've seen a lot of bands go and ask for their money, and get a short story from the promoters that usually go along the lines of "you didn't bring enough people through the door, we can't pay you" and we think that is so unfair. So far, we've never left without the amount we were guaranteed, just through being persistent. But hey, we need to get to the next city somehow. Don't get me wrong, a lot of promoters are top notch, and absolutely fantastic to work with! Just every so often you come across someone who is in it for the wrong reason. Being in a relatively unheard of touring band, or putting on touring bands at your local venue is always gonna leave you out of pocket at some point or another. Other than that, we've partied hard at and after shows. It's all fun! Jonny sometimes gets himself into tricky situations with breaking stuff that he shouldn't.

Here’s the final five, they’re just a few random questions that will help readers and fans get to know you guys a little better:

Q: Any gamers? If so, do you have any favorite games or systems?
A:The guys will hate me for answering this but there is some pretty girly stuff on my ipod, like Enrique, Shakira, Boys II Men and Michael Buble. My musical taste goes a lot poppier and doesn’t go quite a heavy as the others and I get a lot of stick because of it. Mark and Chris have been brought up on classic rock and they are big Rush fans, they do try and turn me every now and then but I just don’t get it, sorry guys. Mikes music tastes goes to some very heavy places, sometimes he puts this spazzy screamy stuff on in the van, it never lasts long though, its always changed very quickly for something more melodic.

Q: All time Favorite band?
A: Questions like this are always so hard. I'd be here forever listing our favorite bands. But New Found Glory, Bayside, Living With Lions... I think it's safe to say we all share an equal love for those bands. We all have our personal favorites too. I think you'd probably be able to guess them just by taking a look at us.

Q: Have you ever been to America? If so, where?
A: None of us have ever been! We do plan to. It will happen! Personally, I really want to go to New York , and some other places on the East Coast. There's so much I want to experience there.

Q: Best movie you've seen this year?
A: Arh man, this question is more difficult that the favorite band one! We are really into films. Me and Si would really recommend you watch The Wrestler. I'd say Public Enemies is up there.

Q: Band or song you listen to that you hope nobody else knows about?
A: I don't think any of us are really embarrassed about anything we listen to. Well, I enjoy Wheatus once in a while. That's pretty lame. Other than that, we'd do well to not reference or listen to Phil Collins within a 24 hour period. We honestly can't get enough.
