The Lows Interview

The Lows Interview

Q: I see you have a couple of shows in the near future, are you trying to book any additional shows or maybe thinking about touring to some extent?

Joe: Yes, absolutely. We've played out of state a few times and have even gone down to North Carolina so touring is definitely in our future. We'd love to tour full time and that is one of our biggest goals.
Brian: Yes, we are currently working on our new record which will be out sometime this spring, once that comes out we will definitely be playing out a lot more.
Andrew: We are always looking to play more shows and hopefully some touring this year. In the future, extensive touring.
Blake: We’d love to tour as much as possible, we’re just trying to play it smart, do it when it’s right. We’re definitely extremely anxious though, we’ll see how things pan out.
Jason: yeah, we are always interested in playing shows, and more so to get out of state and tour. So email us people!

Q:
I know your CD came out in 2008, but is there any new material on the horizon?

Joe: We are currently recording a 6 song EP that should hopefully be coming out early this spring.
Brian: We are in the midst of recording a six song ep with Greg Thomas at Silver Bullet Studios which will be out sometime in the spring.
Andrew: We are currently recording 6 new songs at Silver Bullet Studios in CT (Shai Hulud, Wrench in the Works). I feel the songs are definitely still our style, but a level above where we are on Departure last year. We've really come to know what sound we like in the music we listen to and the music we write, and it's coming across on this new EP.
Blake: Yeah, we’ve been writing ever since we released “Departure” last May, and we’re in the studio right now with Greg Thomas of Silver Bullet Studios, we are in the process of tracking 6 songs, along with a few little extras. We’re thinking of a Spring release.
Jason: we are currently recording an ep at silverbullet studios with Greg Thomas of Shai Halud and the Risk Taken.

Q:
Your music is kind of difficult to classify, what genre or niche do you feel your music is most closely associated with?

Joe: I would just call it rock. Maybe a little indie rock/post hardcore.
Brian: I always described our music as ambient rock, but when i tell someone that we are an ambient rock band people usually just get confused and walk away.
Andrew: I like to think of it as a mix of all styles and genres of rock really. We mix in all influences, whatever we feel at that moment. But I suppose it could be described as experimental rock or melodic indie rock. It's best classified though as The Lows.
Blake: I’d say we’re just a rock band, if I had to classify it. Some may say we’re an indie rock band, a rock band, a post hardcore band, etc. Just a couple of kids writing music we like.
Jason: Just indie rock. I think the new ep is more of our true sound developing, but we are one of those bands that is always going to experiment and change. We all love so much music, not just one category.

Q:
When/if you begin recording new material, what direction do you plan on taking your music? I guess what I'm trying to say is, do you plan on expanding on what you've already done musically or are you contemplating on going in a different direction?

Joe: I think we are expanding, and maybe a better word for it is maturing. This ep is very different from our full length "Departure" but its still The Lows. We spent a lot more time writing and working the songs out on this record than the last and I think when people hear it, it will be obvious.
Brian: Our new songs are more on the heavier side and are structured in a more symphonic manner, if that makes any sense.
Lots of layers, lots of fun.
Andrew: I kind of answered this earlier, but it's definitely more complete and complex over all. The melodic parts are more melodic and have more thought put into them. The dark parts are darker and tense. It's not so much a different direction as it is a more cohesive direction.
Blake: I would like to think as musicians and as people we’re definitely growing and learning. Our newest material is a step above what “Departure” was, musically it’s far more mature, a little more aggressive, I’d say the same for the vocals and lyrics. Still feels and sounds like The Lows, but it has evolved.
Jason: I think music should always evolve, and people should as well. So as we grow as people our music grows as well. We learn to play our instruments better, and play off of each other better. We have certainly all become a little better over the course of the year since we released departure. Blake especially in my opinion has brought a whole new level of voices and ranges to this new ep we're working on. People who may not hve been into departure will love the new ep.

Here’s the final five, they’re just a few random questions that will help readers and fans get to know you a little better:

Q: Favorite song to play live?
Joe: Galaxy. This song for me just flows.
Brian:
Raining Blood.
Andrew: One of our new songs titled Glasgow Smile is my absolute favorite to play. But from Departure, I would say Doldrums or Forever You.
Blake: I really couldn’t say, I think some of the material we just recorded would be great to play live, but we haven’t played them all yet. So I really can’t say.
Jason: Mine would have to be "doldrums" off departure. But we've played out a song called "Glassgow smile" that will be on the new ep, and I love playing that one too.

Q:
Favorite hobby outside of music?
Joe: Eating chicken wings!
Brian: Sleeping.
Andrew: Studying Japanese culture, or exercising. weird mix, i know.
Blake: Just hanging out works. Movies, breaking things, being in the company of friends.
Jason: Lately it's been building, and selling basses, and guitars. But I like to snowboard too when I have time. Which I don't.

Q:
Do you prefer Vinyl, CD, or MP3?
Joe: I love listening to vinyl. It just has that vintage warm feel.
Brian: Cassette.
Andrew: I prefer the sound quality of CD, but the convenience of MP3 has really taken over my life.
Blake: CD, I love having the artwork and the actual physical CD.
Jason: I prefer listing to vinyl. But I've only been using my ipod lately, cause i can listen in the car, and then plug in earbuds and keep listening when i get out of the car. Plus it's really nice to have everything on an ipod instead of sorting through cds when your driving.

Q: Song/artist no one knows you listen to?
Joe: Taylor Swift...Whatever, she is perfect.
Brian: No one listens to Ne-Yo as much as they should in my mind.
Andrew: I'm pretty open about my musical interests, but most people don't know how much I love Johnny Cash and Ray Charles. and Imogen Heap is usually a surprise to people.
Blake: None. I’m open about everything I listen to, to whoever.
Jason: Oddly enough I'm subject to a bit of female vocalists while in the car with my fiance', and I have to admit I have a lot of respect for Christine Aguilera. I also like a lot of jazz like Marcus Miler, stanley Clark ect.

Q:
Any gamers in the group?
Joe: Noooope.
Brian: Nintendo Wii - Raving Rabbids
Andrew: I pretty much hate video games. I played them all growing up, and then music kind of took over all my free time.
Blake: A bit. I need to buy an Xbox or a PS3. My PS2 broke a bit ago. I know if I buy one, I won’t leave home.
Jason: Not really. I mean Joe, and Brian had a Wii at their house. But none of us are regular video game players. I don't even watch television. I don't think Blake or Andrew have video games either. We're nerds for movies, and computers.
