Kyoto Drive Interview w/Adam Binder
PRR: According to your band bio Kyoto Drive formed "out of the ashes of two hardcore rock bands." Are we talking screamo? Death-metal style? Good ol' fashion heavy riffed rock-n-roll? Or something completely different? PRR: How long have you guys dabbled in music? Adam: Chris, Mark, and myself have been playing together for about 7 years now and from what Mike has told me he's been playing in bands since he was about 15. PRR: I see that KD has a family element to it with Chris Piper and Mark Piper. How does that play out in regards to the chemistry of the band? Any conflict? Adam: It works both ways, being brothers they gel really well in a band situation and I imagine it is nice to have so many shared memories with your brother. On the other hand they can bicker over the smallest things like any brothers can, but the good thing is being brothers they can be bickering one second and then the next they are best friends again, you never have to worry about them falling out for very long. It’s strange they are brothers but you can’t tell, they look totally different and they have totally different personalities. PRR: Any exciting tour or venue stories? Adam: We have all the usual ones, van break downs, promoters not paying up at the end of a night, even though they guaranteed you a set fee. But I would say one of my favorites is when we played a really small village called Bridlington, there was a good amount of movement and crowd surfing during our set there. It was held in a tiny room with a really low ceiling and this really small kid was crowd surfing and the people holding him up decided it was good idea to pin him to the ceiling, his face and body was just pushed up against it. Don’t worry, everyone was really gentle with him and he wasn’t harmed at all, it was just a great thing to watch while we played. Funny as hell! PRR: Speaking of touring, do you plan on touring America anytime soon? Adam: I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a goal of ours. We have all grown up watching videos from US bands on Warped Tour and Bamboozle and its something we would love to do given the opportunity. The sad thing is a US band can come to the UK and tour every major city within a week, but the US is so big in comparison, there is so much to see and so many places to go. Its definitely something we are working towards, any offers out there? PRR: Heck yeah we'll try and work something out. In a totally non-music related question bred out of pure curiosity. Are soccer and cricket really that big over in the UK or am I just being a stereotypical jerk? And if it is an intense pastime, are any of you fans? Adam: Soccer? What’s ‘Soccer’? Oh… You mean ‘Football’? Football is huge over here, no sport comes remotely close and I suppose Cricket and Rugby come joint second. Non of us are mega football fans unless it is England in the World Cup. The four of us do love a good Pro Evo tournament though! Its all we did during the mixing of our album, and we have been known to knock a ball round with our pals in Maycomb during a recent tour with them. It all ended too soon though when Mark lost the ball on the roof of a gay bar and was too scared to go in and ask for his ball back. PRR: Favorite Genre of music? PRR: All time Favorite band? PRR: Have you ever been to America? If so, where? PRR: Best movie you've seen this year? PRR: Favorite food? |
